BIOGRAPHY of KOCH Hermann

Dr.-Ing. Hermann Koch was born in November 1954 in Hauswurz, Germany. In 1979 he graduated in Industrial Control Engineering at the Fachhochschule Rüsselsheim. From 1980-1981 he studied at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey, USA. 1986 he graduated in Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree in 1990 from the Technical University of Darmstadt at the High Voltage Institute. Since 1990 he is working with Siemens High Voltage Division where he is responsible for Project Development of Gas Insulated Lines.

He is chairman of the Gas Insulated Substation Committee of the IEEE. Since 2003 he is Board Member of the IEEE Standards Association.

In the IEC he is Secretary of SC 17C for GIS/GIL, and in CENELEC he is Secretary of TC 17 for GIS/GIL, and he is member of CIGRE SC B3 Substation Committee. In Germany he is member of the German National Committee for GIS and GIL UK 432.

During his Siemens time until today he gained the following experiences and responsibilities:

  • 1991-1992 : Sales of High Voltage Circuit Breakers, world-wide
  • 1992-1994 : Centre of Competence in Siemens High Voltage Division
    • Product Development of 145 kV GIS
    • Technical Support in GIS Projects
    • World-wide Technical Presentations of High Voltage Switchgear
  • 1994-1996 : Centre of Competence in Siemens High Voltage Gas Insulated Transmission Lines
Technical and economical feasibility study of long distance GIL for EDF
This study included basic research in insulating gas-mixtures, laying technology, cost, environment and proved the basic by installing test set-up for type and long duration testing.
  • 1996-2002 : Responsibility for the first two pilot projects of the developed GIL of the second generation: 300 kV Application PALEXPO, Switzerland and 550 kV Application Sai Noi, Thailand.
  • Since 2001 : Project development for GIL world-wide

He has published several papers about GIS and GIL in IEEE, CIGRE and at many conferences around the world.
