WETS’11 WORKSHOP ... WHY?

World Energy Transmission System

"Achievement and experience in service of long length (> 10 km),
HV, EHV and UHV electrical links by AC and DC insulated power cables"

To be held within the scope of JICABLE'11 in Paris on June 23rd 2011

The evolution of the technical performance of HV, EHV and UHV AC power insulated cables offer to electric power utilities new development opportunities beyond the areas of high density urban zone and river crossings. Throughout the world, plans for underground and submarine routes whose length exceeds ten kilometers are under development.

Despite the advantage of these solutions to environmental and societal acceptability, the extra cost compared to overhead techniques and the duration of unavailability in the event of damage constitutes a barrier to mass use.

In this context, the survey of world achievements and the workshop held in “Paris La Défense” WETS'07 in June 2007, in coordination with the conference JICABLE'07, permitted us to contribute to establish a state-of-the-art on the principal achievements in the world of long length AC links (> 10 km) and to present the problems encountered and solutions implemented (see jicable.org site or CD Rom WETS'07).

The success of this workshop WETS'07, organized with the patronage and cooperation of CIGRE and of its B1 Committee : « Insulated Cables » invited the organizers to deepen the results obtained and to expand the survey to all the long links underground or submarine, AC and DC.
